Norwegian shipowner and operator Østensjø Rederi has contracted what it describes as an ocean energy support vessel (OESV) newbuild at one of its favourite yards, Astilleros Gondan in Spain. The vessel, scheduled for delivery in the second half of 2027, will be fit to operate across multiple segments, including inspection, maintenance, and repair (IMR), construction, walk-to-work/flotel services, and cable laying.
“The ordering aligns with our ongoing efforts to modernise our fleet, our commitment to new technology, and our dedication to decarbonisation, said Kristian Helland Vea, chief executive at Østensjø Rederi.
The 120-m-long newbuild will have a capacity to accommodate 180 people, be equipped with a battery-powered hybrid propulsion system, coupled with other energy-saving equipment, and be made ready for future low-carbon technology, the company said.
“In a rapidly changing industry, the main design objective has been to create a versatile vessel that can serve across segments. While we cannot predict the future, we are comfortable this vessel will meet both the current and future market needs and remain relevant for all activities we expect will take place in the ocean space for years to come,” added Vea.
Haugesund-based family-owned Østensjø Rederi owns and operates a fleet of around 30 vessels within the offshore oil and gas, offshore wind, offshore accommodation, and towage services, some of which have already been built by Gondan Shipyard.
