Sparq Renewables, the City of Enid, and NextEra Energy broke ground on the Scissortail Renewables project – a renewable natural gas (RNG) plant located on the Enid City Landfill in Oklahoma that will harness methane from household waste to produce renewable energy for Enid residents.

According to the Mayor of Enid, this project will be the first municipally owned landfill in Oklahoma to produce pipeline-quality renewable natural gas and will help the city improve air quality near the facility.

“The Scissortail Renewables project is a milestone for Enid,” said Enid Mayor David Mason. “We are proud to be the first municipality in Oklahoma to use a city-owned landfill to capture gas and turn it into a renewable source of energy for its residents. This facility is an investment in the future of Enid, creating jobs and economic opportunities for our citizens.”

Landfill gas is comprised of methane generated through waste decomposition, and RNG production is known as a carbon-neutral solution that utilizes these emissions to produce a renewable source of energy while directly reducing pollution to the atmosphere.

Once the facility is operational, Scissortail Renewables will capture the naturally occurring methane gas from household waste and convert it into low-carbon gas, which will be injected into the existing ONEOK pipeline to deliver natural gas to consumers to heat homes and fuel businesses.

“Sparq’s vision is to harness the state’s many renewable resources, including landfill gas, to create a more sustainable and cleaner Oklahoma,” said Sparq Renewables CEO Norman Herrera. “Naturally occurring methane from household trash is one source we believe is significantly underutilized in the state, and we appreciate the opportunity to help contribute toward meaningful environmental change through the creation of Scissortail Renewables.”
