Montreal port braces for another strike

The union representing Port of Montreal longshore workers has issued a 24-hour strike notice, running from 7 am on Sunday in the latest industrial action to hit the North American east coast.

The union already carried out a three-day strike in September and continues their strike action refusing to work overtime.

Longshore workers at the Canadian port have been without a collective agreement since December 31 last year.

At the start of this month there was also a three-day port strike across the US east and Gulf coasts.

The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) have since returned to the bargaining table to negotiate all outstanding issues while their existing contract has been extended through to January 15.

Port strikes have been making plenty of headlines around the world over the past couple of years during the cost of living crisis. In Australia, seven days of industrial action at the ports of Brisbane and Darwin kicked off at one minute past midnight today.
