Authorities in Russia’s Far East scrambled over the weekend to prevent an environmental catastrophe as a Chinese bulk carrier grounded off the southwest coast of Sakhalin Island.
The 2010-built, 56,700 dwt An Yang 2 ran aground in stormy conditions on Saturday night. No fuel spillage has been sighted so far, but videos of the ship show it being buffeted hard by waves.
Valery Limarenko, the region’s governor, said yesterday afternoon: “Decisions on unloading the vessel or removing it from the shallows will be made as soon as the weather conditions improve.”
The ship is fully laden with coal bound for China.
