Minor bulks are the most exciting segment in dry bulk, according to Vincenzo Romeo, CEO of Nova Marine Carriers, something that is just as well as the Italian is set to take the stage next April in Geneva Dry’s minor bulks session.
“There are more origins and destinations in minor bulks compared to grains, coal and iron ore,” he points out. In addition, there are more market participants or charterers, which makes the combination very interesting.”
Romano will be on stage in the afternoon of April 29 next year at the President Hotel Wilson in Geneva alongside confirmed speakers Olivia Lennox-King, the chief operating officer at Hong Kong dry bulk giant Cetus Maritime and Willem Vermaat, the shipping director of cement manufacturer Heidelberg Materials Trading.
Minor bulks might account for 40% of dry bulk seaborne movements, but thanks to their massive fragmentation they receive “frustratingly” less coverage than the likes of coal and iron ore, delegates attending the inaugural Geneva Dry in May were told.
Fragmentation, larger ships, and altered cycles formed much of the debate during this first minor bulks session.
Looking ahead to how the markets might look like come the second edition of the show next April, Romeo concedes: “These are challenging times, especially on the geopolitical front. Many countries are moving to protectionism, which will not stimulate trade. The wars obviously have a negative effect. However, markets always have a way to find solutions and alternatives in terms of trade flows as they did at the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.”
Nova Marine Carriers has been in the minor bulks business for over 40 years. Its fleet today numbers 73 ships, a mix of mini bulkers, handies, supras, and cement carriers.
Romeo is one of many shipowners already confirmed to be attending next year’s Geneva Dry, the world’s premier commodities shipping conference.
With more than 35 sponsors already onboard and more than 100 delegates signed up, Geneva Dry 2025, scheduled for April 28 and 29, is set to welcome back familiar sessions such as iron ore, coal, agri-commodities, minor bulks and dry decarbonisation, as well as featuring some new panels including a 50-minute special on forward freight agreements, a chartering spotlight, a focus on electric vehicles, while digital efficiency drivers at port and then at sea will form the first two sessions on Day Two.
Companies attending include 2020 Bulkers, Anglo American, BPG Shipping Company, Cargill, Cetus Maritime, CTM, Eastern Mediterranean Maritime, Enesel, Eramet, Fednav, Fortescue, G2 Ocean, Heidelberg Materials Trading, Himalaya Shipping, Mandarin Shipping, Marfin Management, Metbulk Shipping, Norbulk Shipping, Nova Marine Carriers, Orion Reederei, Precious Shipping, Seanergy Maritime Holdings, Star Bulk, SwissMarine, Taylor Maritime Investments, Trafigura, United Maritime Corporation, Vale, Wah Kwong Maritime Transport Holdings, and Western Bulk.
