A product tanker, Elisabet Satu, caught fire off Bali yesterday with five crew dying and another 15 injured.

The eight-year-old, Indonesian-flagged ship was on a domestic voyage when two explosions occurred near the accommodation block following a fire which is believed to have started in the engine room. The ship quickly blacked out following the first of the two explosions.

The laden ship was carrying a cargo of diesel. The fire was brought under control by a number of tugs attending the scene. Of the injured, three crew are in critical condition, suffering 80% burns. Only the ship’s captain escaped unscathed.

The Elisabeth Satu ship is used by Pertamina to deliver fuel in Indonesia’s Nusa Tenggara region.
