Helix Energy Solutions’ marine contracting business unit, Helix Robotics Solutions has secured a contract from SSEN Transmission to provide unexploded ordnance (UXO) survey services for the Eastern Green Link 2 offshore subsea cable project.

The contract is expected to last 125 days and is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2025.

Under the contract, Helix expects to utilize the chartered-in Glomar Wave subsea support vessel, a work-class remotely operated vehicle, and the company’s in-house explosive ordnance disposal team to conduct the survey along an 80-m corridor.

Delivered as a joint venture by National Grid and SSEN Transmission, the Eastern Green Link 2, between Peterhead in Scotland and Drax in the North of England, will include the longest HVDC subsea cable in the UK and is the UK’s single largest electricity transmission project ever. The connection, with a transmission capacity of 2 GW is due to be operational in 2029.
